Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (REC) is one of the Navratna Companies functioning under the administrative control of the Ministry of Power. It is a public Infrastructure Finance Company providing financial assistance to the power sector in all segments, be it Generation, Transmission or Distribution. The company provides loans to Central/ State Sector Power Utilities, State Electricity Boards, Rural Electric Cooperatives, NGOs and Private Power Developers.

REC has been appointed as the nodal agency by the Government of India for implementation of DDUGJY (Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana), a scheme which aims at providing 24x7 sustainable and affordable power to all households in the country.

NDDB Foundation for Nutrition (NFN) launched its ‘Giftmilk’ programme in Latehar district of Jharkhand funded by REC under its CSR initiative on 21st November 2017 in presence of Shri Raghubar Das CM, Government of Jharkhand. Jharkhand Milk Federation (JMF) ‘Medha Dairy’ has been identified as the supplier for the programme. Daily about 13,800 students in 37 Government schools are provided with 200 ml of pasteurised fortified flavoured milk with an objective to address malnutrition in the children and to provide nutrition values to government school children. REC has come forward and generously provided support for this initiative

A preliminary baseline study was conducted by Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in schools of Latehar district before initiating the ‘Giftmilk’ programme. The study showed that the area with predominant tribal population had around 40% of its children malnourished. There was a rampant presence of anemia among the children. About 1/4th of them had visual imparity and majority having below normal level of intelligence. It was astounding that 3% of the children had never tasted milk and 80% did not consume milk daily.

These findings throw a light on the requirement of better nutrition to the children and proving the necessity of this noble initiative of NFN and REC.

The initial phase of distribution has received a positive response from the students, parents as well as the community. The students enjoy the milk and eagerly wait for the daily offering. The teachers have reported a steady improvement in the attendance of the schools. The Chief Minister of Jharkhand, has appreciated the initiation of NFN and REC and appealed to other organizations to come forward as donors to expand the programme.
